  Maryland Geography Bee

Congratulations and Good Luck to 7th grader Christopher Stinson!!! Christopher was last month's winner of the CSP Geography Bee and has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to go on to compete in the 2015 Maryland National Geographic State Bee. The contest will be held at Community College of Baltimore on Friday, March 27, 2015.

This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 27th year. School Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state Bees.

Each state champion will receive $100, the “National Geographic Atlas of the World, 10th Edition,” a medal, and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 11-13, 2015. The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the Society. The national champion will also travel, all expenses paid, to the Galápagos Islands, where he will experience geography firsthand through up-close encounters with the islands’ unique wildlife and landscapes.

National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD will air the 2015 National Geographic Bee Championship final round, moderated by award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien, on Friday, May 15, at 8 p.m.

CSP wishes Christopher the best of luck as he moves forward in this exciting competition!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We just completed the first week LA PARCC Testing with 6 Graders. Next week we will continue testing. Please see the attachment for the dates of the PARCC Performance-Based Assessments that will be held at CSP next week.

I am confident that our students will continue CSP tradition of doing their best!

As with any standardized test, parents play a vital role in helping their children prepare for the testing days.
Here are some things that you can do to help us prepare your child for these upcoming assessments:
• Please plan around these test dates to avoid absences and appointments that would require students to miss a test session.
• Please plan ahead to ensure your child arrives to school on-time. The testing will begin shortly after morning announcements.
• Practice with the test platform. PARCC practice tests are available at http://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/
• Ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep before each test day.
• Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast on test mornings.
• Find ways to help your child relax before the test and debrief with them after the test.
• Remain calm and positive. PARCC testing is new for everyone this year—teachers, administrators, parents, and students. We will all learn together! And being a lifelong learner is a great tradition at CSP!

If your child is taking STEM Math, they will have access to the online calculator in the testing window but if they want to use a hand held calculator you should get a four/five function basic calculator for them.

  Middle School Spanish

Students have begun oral presentations this week. The Power Point slides have been very engaging and informative. We have learned much regarding the history, the culture and the geography of the countries of the Spanish-speaking world. We have also learned about our country's influence in the region. Did you know that while we begin our approach towards spring many of the countries in South America move away from summer and begin to approach fall. Thank you for your continued support of the instruction that takes place in our classroom.

Para servirles siempre,

sr. Mc Donald
