This year 2,584 students took Part I of the competition and 279 students qualified to take Part II. In addition to a sound knowledge of high school mathematics (up to, but not including, Calculus), both parts required a fair amount of mathematical insight and ingenuity. The three participants earning the highest combined scores on both parts received $500, $400, and $300, respectively. Among those completing both parts of the competition, the highest scorer for each county and Baltimore City and the District of Columbia was awarded a prize of $100.
